you would think they might grow even slower in the wild since seedlings would grow in rock crevices and tight spaces where there's not much access sunlight.

They look good, what's your setup like? Are you using a heat mat to keep them warm?

Thanks for the advice Trichocereus! I think I've got everything i need now for the soil mix and will be planting these seeds pronto. I'll make sure to give an update on how well they germinate.

Cultivation / how to make your own cacti seed soil?
August 19, 2014, 05:11:34 AM
Hello all,
A friend of mine was generous enough to gift me with a couple hundred peruvian torch seeds that I'd like to plant as soon as possible. I don't have much experience with growing cacti from seed and I'm not sure what the ideal soil mix for this species would consist of. I've done some reading and have come to the conclusion that a custom home made mix would be more beneficial than a pre-made commercial mix. It seems that a mix of soil, sand and a draining agent are important ingredients for a starter mix..I'm wondering if  either perlite or vermiculite would work to avoid rot and how much i should be adding to the mix to keep it draining properly. if anyone has a mix recipe to share or tips and recommendations for a beginner it would be greatly appreciated!
