Random cacti grow log
« on: November 08, 2015, 03:59:21 PM »
So my cactus growing has become almost as random as my thoughts. You gotta get a taste of everything before you can get a real pallete though aye.

The seedlings are bridgessii and about 3 or 4 months old. Open air, plain sand, regular misting with distilled water. I'm thinking they might like some nutes soon.

Theres a bunch of bridgessii monstrose there, prbly cant see them all. Theres a few little san pedros and a few bigger rooted bridgessiis.

you can see the little loph button in the background. Soon to get more loph seeds and moar of every kind of seeds and start learning to graft.

Theres also some apparently rare cacti there, you can see one of them in the bottom right corner of one of the pix. consolea corallicola

also have a quiabentia verticillat that needs to be potted. Going to the beach to get sand and store for perlite to get the rest of these potted. Life is kinka mangled right now and imhaving trouble getting much done when theres so much i feel i need to do i dont know where to start.

anyways, this is as much for me to keep track of my grow as for you all to watch. chime in with any advice comments or anything. I will post a list of all the random succulents I have hopefully will have a chance later tonight.

Love you all

I hink not. I know they mighlay babies in the soil thus i must layer all soil top level with sand and in case of egg infestatinon kill with diluted h2o2

i think it's not the flies themselves that are a threat to the cacti but their larvae.  the flies are just annoying.  yellow sticky paper might help.  but yeah, 1/4 tbs ish of pure neem oil in a litre spray bottle.  you can use a tiny bit of natural soap as a surfactant too. if you run into mites this is a must.  then you have to repeat every three days for a while to ensure you get them all.  h2o2 sure but i don't know about seedlings or if you want to water this time of year.

Well the flies have moar or less dissipated.

House has been cleaned pretty thuroughly and theyve run for cover. peroxided and hydroxided the drains.

If they come back neem will be in order for the plants

I have a bunch of seeds I'm going to germ tonight/tomorrow.

I'mwondering about sand. Normally I would use "play sand" and it works fine for bridgesiis.I sterilize this first in boiling water.

Play sand is fine particles andppl say to use river or desert sand biut all I have here is the beach and the stores only have play sand .

Last time my lophs were in with my bridges and the ones that started growing stopped growing. I'm wondering if maybe this is because they didnt have room to grow into the sand.

Maybe I could mix a little perlite in??

Beside that I do open air and mist a few times a day with distilled water and shaded sunlight..

Hey,

Just thought I'd update this.. These pictures were from a few years ago when i was living in Virginia.. As I'm sure you can tell by reading my old posts I wasn't doing too well back then.... I ended up having to leave my house abruptly and left all my cacti to one of my neighbors ... I haven't heard from him (although I haven't put a lot of effort into contacting him) since then... So hopefully the cactus were given a good home...

Anyways, now it's been a few years and I am more or less starting over. I have a good handful of trichcereus hybrids germinating and seedlings germinated, a few "pure" species germinating and a handful of bigger seedlings and small cacti that were gifted to me. In fact the majority of my seeds and cacti have been either given to me as gifts or at a  very low price from members of this forum and other similar forums...  It is very much appreciated and hopefully I will have enough to share by next season...

I will take some pictures and upload them later today... Right now I am just as broke as I was years ago so my main focus is to try and get a job or some steady form of income so I won't have to worry about expenses so much that should really be benign,,,, Once I have a bit of money my idea is to get an LED light to augment the lighting in the winter time .... I know people say you can't grow trichocereus under an LED but maybe with some natural light from the window and an LED they will grow... Also I plan on having other cacti growing that will be able to grow ok under and LED... Think halonium style...

Ok everyone, sorry for the long winded post.... Let's get this forum rolling again!

Nice collection S, now if you can just get those oscars grafted your going to have a boat load of mutants.
For those that graft...
Every areole is a cactus waiting to be born
