they both took and grew well for about a month.  a bird (assumption) bit into one and took a large chunk out of the other.  both failed after that.  grew the opuntia all summer.  took some cuttings and they are currently rooting for grafting in the spring.  this time they'll be much better protected.  out of all the stock tried, peres is definitely the easiest but some of the columnar cacti seem to give faster growth.  although it might just be the maturity of the root systems.
