So I have some peyote seedlings that have been growing for approx. 4-5 months now that began to change from a deep green to a purplish hue after I altered their lighting conditions. Up to this point i had been taking advantage of the long summer days and was just keeping them in a sunny windowsill. I decided to try moving them under a fluorescent light since the days are starting to get shorter. I'm pretty sure that the light was too intense because they started to burn within a few days. I took them out from the light and put them back on the windowsill for now. I need to reverse the damage that the artificial light caused and could really use some advice on how to properly introduce them to the fluorescent for the upcoming winter months. thanks!
I'm no expert but i would say:
how close were they to the fluorescent lights? best to lower the light intensity until they're green again, then gradually increase it, always waiting a week to see how the plant responds. start with at least a couple of feet between the plants and the fluorescents. make sure your bulbs are the ones intended for plants/aquariums. keep them relatively warm over the winter too.
Thanks Chief, I ended up moving the light to a higher level above the plants to decrease the intensity and they responded well. They've bounced back quite a bit and are starting to fatten up again.. I also moved them to a warmer spot in the room away from window drafts
sounds like a good plan. i think it's important to always give them time to adjust when increasing light intensity or changing temperature. from my experience cactuses will burn worse than ginger kids if they go from low light to full sun. post some pics.
I ended up giving these struggling lophs to a friend to take care of..i felt that they were in a better position to help them recover. But I did plant my own seeds for the first time earlier this month and I've been putting my focus into those instead. Check out the grow logs, I posted some pics there :)
